There are custom wraps, and then there are wraps you only see once in your life. This project falls into the second category. When our friend Justin (Bearded Tesla) pulled up with a Cybertruck and said he wanted a one-of-one Cybercab Gold wrap, we knew we were about to do something insane.
The goal was simple on paper but chaotic in reality. Create a Cybercab-inspired gold finish using an Avery Dennison color that technically doesn’t exist in this style, laminate it ourselves with PPF, and install it in a single marathon session. What followed was two days of heat guns, re-cuts, problem solving, and some of the coolest finishing details we’ve ever added to a truck.
What Is Cybercab Gold
The inspiration came from Tesla’s Cybercab concept color. There isn’t a perfect off-the-shelf match, but we found a starting point. Avery Dennison SW900 Gloss Metallic Gold. Beautiful material, but far too glossy for the Cybercab look. That’s where our large-format laminators came in. By laminating the film with PPF, we created a totally new finish. A satin-matte metallic gold with deep undertones and a subtle sheen. One of one. This method also changed everything about the install because dry installing laminated vinyl behaves nothing like normal vinyl or traditional PPF.
Day One
We kicked things off around 1 pm, joking that we’d finish by dinner. We quickly realized that was a lie. Laminated film doesn’t stretch like standard wrap vinyl. Two materials fight each other until you use the perfect balance of heat, tension, and patience. Even anchoring the material was different. We started with the hood and frunk, expecting an easy warm up. Instead, we discovered the biggest issue of the entire project. Our Cybertruck body panel templates have a built-in stretch tolerance of about five percent. That’s perfect for pure vinyl or pure PPF installs. But once vinyl and PPF are laminated together, stretch tolerance drops dramatically. Pieces that normally fit perfectly were suddenly short in a few areas. We were getting small adhesive failures and tension spots. After doing the hood and frunk, we made the call. Scrap the template approach, switch to full bulk installation, reposition everything manually, and hand trim the entire truck. More time, more precision, no shortcuts. But the only way to deliver the result the customer deserved.
Day Two
After some sleep, we went back at it. With the bulk wrap method, things started flowing. Panel by panel, edge by edge, the Cybercab Gold finish finally began to come alive. The color looked incredible outdoors. Slightly more yellow than original Cybercab renders, but close enough to look intentional and bold. With the gold complete, we moved on to accents. We used pieces from our Cybertruck DIY vinyl wrap kit (seamed version) to create clean black lines in the rocker areas that break up the large gold surface.
Then came the fun part: the logo emboss. For the front rocker area, we stacked multiple layers. Vinyl, PPF, a recessed embossed logo, another vinyl layer, and a top graphic. Five total layers to give the logo a dimensional, almost factory metal-badge feel. Subtle, but ridiculously cool up close.
The Finishing Touches
Just when we thought we were done, the owner asked if we could tint the truck as well. So we added Avery Dennison Supreme Encore IR 20 percent to the front windows for a clean, even look. We also applied PPF to the Cybertruck B pillar buttons. Anyone who owns a Cybertruck knows those areas get fingerprints and micro scratches easily, so PPF makes a world of difference. For the front light bar, we used a 45 percent shade PPF to give the DRL bar a sleeker vibe without darkening the headlights.
Once everything was cleaned, tucked, and heat-set, the final walk-around was unreal. The gold finish explodes with metallic depth in sunlight. The embossed logo is a special easter egg for anyone paying attention. The front and rear “Cybercab” logos were a nice final touch. And the overall two-tone personality fits the Cybertruck perfectly.
Why This Wrap Matters
This wasn’t just a cosmetic job. It showcased what’s possible when you combine vinyl, PPF, lamination, and custom installation techniques. It proved Cybertrucks aren’t limited to silver, matte black, or satin stealth looks. With creativity and patience, you can build a finish that genuinely looks like it came from an alternate Cybertruck prototype line. And most importantly, the customer loved it. That’s the only metric that matters.
